Acer P610 GPS review

Published on November 23rd, 2006 in acer, gps navigation, reviews

acer-p610-443.jpgAcer’s new P610 GPS navigation system got reviewed recently and it received 4 stars out of 5. The P610 is a compact, slim device which features a 4″ screen. Acer pre-installed the Copilot 6 mapping software which is a good name in the mapping business. The GPS receiver in the P610 is the SiRF Star III chipset and the device can also function as an MP3 player, photo viewer and store a contacts database for easy navigation to known addresses.

The reviewer only found one frustrating feature with the P610 which was in the software department:

There’s no support for full postcode searching. You’ll have to do things the ‘old-fashioned’ way, selecting a country, partial postcode, street name and house number. This is rather frustrating; the interface is awkward with a rather clunky address database so don’t even think about doing it on the move.

Acer P610 is priced at around £220.

Acer N35 GPS navigation with PDA for the UK market

Published on October 14th, 2006 in acer, gps navigation

Acer N35 is a complete navigation system in the palm of your hand that doubles as a PDA. The Acer n35 is based on a Pocket PC that uses Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 Pocket PC Premium Edition and runs on a Samsung Processor at 266MHz. There is an integrated GPS on board so all you have to do is turn on the device, flip up the antenna, insert the 256 MB SD-Card that holds “map’n'app” and off you go. Destinator 3 with regional map data of the UK & Ireland comes pre-installed on the SD-memory card. European maps can be unlocked via additional subscription.

The N35 lets you plan your routes ahead of time and is smart enough to optimize (or optimise) them. You can even get voice guidance and be yelled at for going over the speed limit. The screen measures 3.5″, much like most other navigation systems out there.

Other than navigation you can also use the N35 to to your favourites or any contact you stored and/or synchronized to Microsoft Pocket Outlook. N35 comes installed with Pocket Word and Pocket Excel so you can stay busy once you get to your destination. If you are looking for entertainment you can use the music player and picture viewer on board.

We kindly ask our British users to let us know how much the N35 costs if they’ve seen one before.

Acer P600 series GPS navigators now live

Published on October 11th, 2006 in acer, gps navigation

acer-p600-851.gifAcer’s two new GPS navigation systems we mentioned last month (Acer P610 and P630) are now up on their own website with full specs and features. The device will feature a 4″ LCD touch screen and come with your regular MP3 and picture viewers. There is an SD/MMC expansion slot but the battery will last only 3 hours so you may want to turn down that music if you don’t want to get lost. Other than the battery life rest of the specs look promising - Acer made sure they only used the good stuff such as the SiRF Star III GPS receiver chip and NAVTEQ digital maps.

Also worth mentioning are live traffic info capabilitiy and the extensive POI library.
